The book here presented is the result of 2 years of intense research collaboration funded by the University of Texas at Austin and FAPESP – São Paulo State Agency for Research – Grant FAPESP: 2013/50918-4. We organized 4 colloquiums (2 in Austin, 2 in São Paulo); mobilized two dozen professionals; took 12 students to experience a different reality in another part of our continent; and testes all those concepts with an array of design and land use ideas for Itaim Paulista in the eastern periphery of São Paulo. We are proud to present this book as a contribution to the debate and hope this is just the beginning of a never ending search for revamping both the territorial planning capacity of the state and the consolidation of participatory processes at the national level.
